Re-installing operating system is often done by most computer users. When the computer feels too slow because of many unnecessary programs that consumes too much resource, reinstalling your OS can be refreshment.

Installing operating system frequently takes quite sometimes. So, spare your time for about 30 minutes to 1 hour to do the task. The duration depends on the installation of hardware (read: the processor, memory and hard disk) that are used.

Actually, reinstalling the operating system doesn’t have to run that long. By hard disk cloning, there’s no need to go through the lengthy process. All you need to do is by copying the cloned result and your computer will be ready to run again. To get a fresh clone result you better clone the disk right after you finished installing the OS and drivers.

All we need to do for the cloning are the software for example we’re gonna use Norton Ghost from Symantec. We also need a CD-writer, start-ups CD, and 2 1, 44 MB floppy diskette.

Save to CD
Since we’re about to clone the operating system, the drive that contains the operating system that will be cloned – usually drive C. But sometimes it can be other drive letter if we installed other operating systems.

In this tutorial, we’ll make the clone of drive C that contains the Windows.

Without much ado, let’s get started.

  1. Run Norton Ghost by clicking [Start] [program] [Norton Ghost] [Norton Ghost].
  2. You will see the Ghost Basic screen. Select the first option, [Backup].
  3. Click [Next].
  4. Source options select drive C. on Destination option select [Recordable CD or DVD]. After that, click [Next] [OK].
  5. Click the button [Next], [Next] again, [Next] again. Then click [Continue], click [Run Now], and the last click [OK].

Windows will restart and Norton Ghost also will back-up your hard disk. Now you have 1 CD, which is the image of drive C. The content of the CD is only one GHO extension. You won’t be able to see the contents of the file without the Ghost Explorer.

Creating Start-Up Disk
We need start-up disk so the GHO file can be used when we reinstall the OS. Start-up disk can be 1.44 MB floppy diskette. OK, for example let’s call the first Floppy disk “A diskette”, while the second diskette the “B diskette.”

Run Norton Ghost and click [Ghost Utilities] [Norton Ghost boot wizard] [CD / DVD startup disk with ghost] [Next] [Use PC-DOS] [Next] [Next] [Next]> [Next] [OK]. Enter blank floppy disks for the CD / DVD and start-ups. Click [Start] to format a diskette, and then click [Close].

Next, the diskettes will be used as start-up disk. When the confirmation to enter the second diskette appears, remove the floppy disk and insert the next diskette (B). Click [Start] to format and Click [Close]. Wait until the process is completed and click [Finish].

Now you have 2 startup floppy disks. The disk will be used for booting for the first time. Please note that the both disk are related. The A diskette won’t run without the disk B, so it vice versa.

“Install”
Why we give the install word with quotation marks? That’s because we don’t actually install the operating system. However, only copy of the operating system that we had previously installed.

In the BIOS, Set the PC to boot from floppy. Insert the A floppy to the drive. Follow the instructions on screen, if you’re asked to insert the B, please do so. Next you’ll be prompted to insert the A once more and click [Enter], and the last time you’ll be asked to insert the B. Here we go, now we have entered the Norton Ghost.

To do cloning from a CD to the hard disk, select [Local] [Partition] [from image]. Navigate to the CD-ROM that contains GHO files, and click [Open]. In the “Select source partition from image file”, click [OK]. Then, on the “Select a local destination drive by clicking on the drive number”, click [OK]. Select the drive that will be cloned, in this case select the drive C, click [OK] and click [Yes].

The Cloning process will run until it reaches 100 percent. Click [Reset the computer] to restart. Remove the floppy from the drive and Set the BIOS to boot from hard disk.
