Joint study by leading security technology companies McAfee, and ICF International, reveals that 62 trillion spam e-mails that sent in 2008 have produced about 33 terawatt hours (TWh) of energy per year. This is equivalent to the electricity used in 2.4 million homes in the U.S., with the green house gas emissions (GHG – greenhouse gas) that is equivalent to 3.1 million passenger cars that consume 2 billion gallons of gas. According to the ICF, the figures are equivalent to 17 million metric tons of CO2, which contribute 0.2% of global CO2 emissions.
Studies also estimate, the majority of energy consumed in connection with spam activities – about 80% – comes from users who search for and delete the spam e-mail. According to ICF, a valid e-mail results in equivalent to 4 grams of CO2, while spam messages only about 0.3 grams of CO2. This doesn’t seem to be much.
