Sometimes we got confused with some mobile computer terms like Notebook, laptop, Subnotebook,Netbooks, UMPC and more to come…. Are you sure the device you’re using right now is a Notebook or Netbook? let’s find out

Actually there are not too many differences from those title words. Essentially they refer to small personal computer designed for mobile use (mobile computer).

Notebook

Notebook is the early terms that comes along with the emerging of mobile computing tech. A laptop is usually shaped like a big notebook with 0.7-1.5 inches thickness and dimensions ranging from 10×8 inches (27×22cm, 13″ display) to 15×11 inches (39×28cm, 17″ display) and up. Nowadays laptops weighing 3 to 12 pounds.

Laptop

Laptops term comes in line with the terms Notebook. However, the word ‘laptop’ is often used because it is taken from the behavior of notebook users, who prefer to put the device on their lap rather than put it on the desk

Subnotebook is Laptops weighing typically between 0.8 to 2.7 kg and a 6.4 to 13.3 inches diagonally display. A

subnotebook is a lightweight and small portable computer, which has most features of a standard laptop computer but comes smaller package. Subnotebook is often applied to systems that run full versions of desktop OS such as Windows or Linux, rather than specialized software such as Palm OS, Windows CE, or Internet Tablet OS.

Netbook

Netbook is a new term, which launched by Intel in February 2008. Netbook is intended for small sized notebook category with standard functionality and lightweight. Netbook can be called as a smaller version of the laptop. Technically, Netbook is a new term for the small size laptop with the emphasis on the function of Internet applications and wireless communication. Hence, should have wi-fi connection.

There are also terms Nettop. Nettop is a version of the desktop (computer desk) in mini size and an internet connection which is a must. Netbook and nettop is the Intel project to provide computer access in developing countries.

Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC)

Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) is a small form factor (a standard size and shape) for tablet PCs and subnotebook/netbooks. Besides of 7-10 inch netbooks, 13.3 inch subnotebooks are also included. The form factor was initially developed as part of Project Origami, and at first only included tablet pc’s. The project was a joint development exercise by Intel, Samsung, and Microsoft. Intel is also responsible for the Mobile Internet Device, a variation on the UMPC concept.

Tablet PC is a notebook or slate-shaped mobile computer, that comes with a touchscreen or graphics tablet/screen hybrid technology which allows the user to operate the computer with a digital pen, or a fingertip, instead of a mouse And keyboard

The tablet PC offers a more mobile way to interact with a computer. The device often used where regular notebooks are impractical or don’t provide the needed functionality.

The term “Tablet PC” was introduced by Microsoft in a Keynote Address by Bill Gates at the 2001 Comdex conference. Tablet PC also known as Pen computer or Pen computing.

Wibrain nice umpc

digimoz recently tried a UMPC gadget made in South Korea, Wibrain B1E. It’s weighting only grams and 4.8 ” screen, with QWERTY keyboard and WSVGA 1024 x 600 pixels touch screen.

Wibrain enriches UMPC category that previously appeared, like product by OQO, Fujitsu, Samsung Q1, Asus R2H, or Sony VAIO UX280. With lenght only 192 mm using four cells battery. Wibrain resemble to models developed by Samsung as well as Asus, stretching lenghtwise with seperated keyboard operated with thumbs.
